And how will the RBS/ Santander deal affect first level, small and midsized businesses?
I find that the Co-op is very good. If you belong to the Federation of Small Businesses (worthwhile in itself) you get free Co-op banking as part of the package if you choose.
You can also pay in cheques at post offices. Given the scarcity of bank branches these days, it's another useful feature.
Check out the story on Funding Circle. It seems that the British public has defied banks and lent £1m to the UK's small businesses via Funding Circle (www.fundingcircle.com) in its first 10 weeks.
Funding Circle is the UK's first ever online marketplace where people can directly lend to small businesses. The social lending platform's success highlights the pent up demand for affordable finance from small businesses and the desire from consumers for better rates of interest on their money than available from banks.
There are some other banks that have recently been launched supposedly to help SMEs. What are they like?
I must add that I really like the ethical side of the Co op. And have just agreed to open my business accounts with them as I am brand new. I have used Natwests and Barclays etc The first it must be said actually listened to my proposal in 2000 and helped me get a very successful practice off the ground. But that was by finding a business manager by word of mouth. I will try to update this as I progress with the co op. I do like the sound of the funding circle so thanks Dave I will check it out.
