Only one in 10 small businesses do so every day apparently. And more than half build and run their websites themselves.
What kind of priority do you give to your web presence?
And that's to add the weekly blog entry. However this does not include things like our twitter feed, which updates the site automatically...
Have not got a web site
@efc247: really interested to know why you don't have a website?
It used to be "mandatory" for any self respecting business to have a website, but with social networking sites, ebay, amazon and other trading platforms, standing on others shoulders and going where the customers are seems like a far more sensible option.
Anyone else deliberately avoiding putting a website up?
The amount of updates a company makes to a website does not reflect how busy that company is. A company may just put a lot of time into their website, if a company makes more sales online of course they are going to try and push sales.
From an SEO perspective good written and regularly updated websites rank highly.
It's a terrible admission to make, but our own website is very old, totally out of date and not suitable for our needs. It's not good and the work is very old. We update it rarely.
However we as design, produce and create excellent sites for our clients we really do not have much of an excuse.
The only thing I'll say is that we want to produce something that is really good and that we are proud of. We've done about 3 new design concepts but each one isn't quite right and we go back to the drawing board!
Sometimes its good to compare the website to other more traditional sales/marketing tools. For instance, how often would you update your shop window (presuming you had one)? How often would you update your stock? How often would you contact potential clients by ringing them up and having a chat?
If the answer to these questions is "well quite a bit really and probably at least a couple of times a month" then you really should make the time on your website too. After all, its meant to be a window onto what you do/sell.
We have a client who has around 11,000 pages of content and updates every day and Google request a news feed from them every 5 minutes. EVERY 5 MINUTES!!! Thats insanely cool and it really helps them with their sales and visibility.
One thing that many people think is "well I don't need to update my printed brochure every month so why should I update the website". Its simply too costly in terms of cash to reprint 10,000s of brochures. But a website can be much more than an online brochure and be very cost effective to update compared to its printed cousin. Plus its what people expect these days. A website with news that's 6 months out of date is probably more damning than a website with no news at all!
Time is precious these days and to make time to do this additional job of updating your website can be tedious, especially when there's a deadline to get those 300 packs of widgets out the door before 4pm today. But when you do embrace your website and make a concerted effort to update it regularly (and I mean at least once per month) then you may very well see the benefits in terms of traffic which leads to sales which then leads to more wonga or at least more Kudos!
Why not speak to your Web Designer about helping you? If time is your issue, take someone on a fixed monthly retainer to create and update content on your website on your behalf or do something clever with Twitter, Facebook and RSS feeds to liven up those stale home pages.
We have a web master to make up date as and when sometime twice a day.
My websites are kept up to date by the companies I work with.
However, my blog is solely down to me, and I look to update at least once a month, but often more
I got my webmaster to integrate a blog into my site with the content going onto my domain name so I can easily update it. As the blog feeds the content into Google via RSS, it's on Google within an hour or so, as opposed to standard websites where it takes ages unless Google has clocked that your site is very active.
I reckon some small biz start-ups can manage with just a blog instead of a website, as long as the content goes on to their own domain. They can upgrade to a website later if needed.
Not being funny but, if you have the time to update your own website on a daily bases, this tells me that you are not busy and have nothing else to do - we update once a week as it's the only time we have
