Worldwide sales of mobile phones have grown by 35% over the last year, according to Gartner Research, to a total of 417 million. Smartphone sales grew by 96%, but still account for less than 20% of the total.
It's perhaps no surprise to see Nokia, Samsung and LG retaining the top three positions (albeit with all of them losing market share because of the rise of Asian 'white box' manufacturers, who now account for one third of sales. But one of the most dramatic changes has been the way Apple has overtaken Research in Motion (who produce BlackBerry smartphones).
BlackBerry sales are up by 40%, but that is completely overshadowed by the success of Apple, whose iPhone sales grew by more than 91%. The only top ten producer to do better was HTC, who boosted sales by 144%.
Look at phone OS adoption and you will see that Android is outstripping Apple and RIM in terms of growth.
