Who's responsible for marketing in your business?

I once met the MD of an office and stationary supplies business and he was absolutely ‘seething’. ‘Why?’ I asked him. He explained that he had just been invited to the opening of one of his key client’s massive new office extensions. I didn’t understand why he’d get upset about that. He explained that, in addition to stationary supplies, they also sold office furniture and he’d missed out on a massive order!
