The ‘Intellectual Property Awareness Survey of Business’ has shown that only 15 percent of small companies have ever sought advice on safeguarding their ideas. Only 11 percent of firms overall assign responsibility for managing intellectual property (IP) rights. This is compared to 43 per cent of larger companies, meaning that smaller enterprises risk missing out on valuable income from their creativity.

Poor password practices put identities at risk

When it comes to safeguarding personal information online, many people leave their virtual keys in the front door. Research from internet security firm Webroot, uncovers common password practices that are putting consumers’ identities and their wallets at risk.

In a survey of more than 2,500 individuals across the US, UK and Australia, the most commonly used password-protected sites among consumers are banks (88%), personal email accounts (86%), and Facebook (72%) – all of which are rife with sensitive information.

Lax security and payment complexity leaving small firms stung by fraud

Insufficient security checks and the complexity involved in taking online payments are leaving small firms exposed to payment processing fraud, the Forum of Private Business is warning.

Accepting card payments online is an increasingly important source of revenue for small firms but many business owners have little or no experience of the contractual processes that can be involved.
