Everything you need to know about finned tubes

Looking for finned tubes? Why not let USEL Tubular Division help?

USEL Tubular Division are experts in supplying high quality heat exchanger tubes and can help you find the right heat exchanger tubes. They cut them to length, deburr and u-bend them – meeting your exact specification.

What are finned tubes?

Finned tubes are components of heat exchangers. With small fins on the outside, finned tubes act as a filter for transferring heat from the inside to the outside, and vice versa.

The design of these tubes is simple. They are configured to transfer liquid on the inside and gas on the outside. They have an increased surface area to speed up the process of heat transfer.

There are 3 factors affecting the rate of heat transfer:

  1. The temperature difference between the fluids
  2. The heat transfer coefficient between the fluids and tube wall
  3. The surface area that fluid is exposed to

What are they used for?

A finned tube can be used for many different applications, making it a favourite of numerous industries, such as:

  • Fabrication
  • Gas production
  • Marines
  • Oil
  • Petrochemical
  • Petroleum
  • Power generation
  • Steel

Tubes used in heat exchangers – including air, water and chemically cooled exchangers – are generally specifically finned to suit individual requirements.

Which finned tubes do USEL Tubular Division supply?

USEL Tubular Divisionsuppliesa wide range of heat exchanger tubes which are best suited to the requirements of industrial processing plants.

Here are some of the finned tubes available:

High Fin Tubes

The helical high finned tubes  have been used in air-cooled heat exchangers for more than 60 years.

An integrally finned tube is another example of a high fin tube. It’s designed to increase heat transfer but minimises the physical size and cost of the heat exchanger tube.

Longitudinal Finned Tubes

The longitudinal finned tubes are ideal for multi-tube heat exchange applications, fired heaters, gas coolers and tank heaters.

If you require the finned tube to be perforated, all you need to do is let tube suppliers know.
