The new BMW 6 Series Convertible looks pretty much like the previous model, but features in-car email which can be displayed via Bluetooth through the BMW ConnectedDrive system.
Owners of a BlackBerry smartphone can access their mobile phone's email folder using the BMW iDrive control system. The system allows emails to be received and either displayed on the Control Display unit or they can be read aloud using a text-to-speech function.
BMW is proud of the fact it's the first car maker to offer emails on the move. But is this a significant step forward for motoring (like MP3 connectivity) and a future 'must-have' feature for business motorists? Or is it the answer to a question nobody asked?
It's hard not to think of emails on the move being distracting. After all, if using a hand-held mobile is not only illegal but worse apparently than being over the alcohol limit.
However, I think there is a move to cars being more connected and we will see more of this in the future.
For example, the new Audi A7 Sportback features wifi on the move. It delivers Google Earth images on the satnav - I've used it, and it really is the best sat-nav I've used (not one navigation error from me!) - but it also delivers a wifi hotspot. So that your fellow travellers can go online - perfect for kids on Facebook. Or, perhaps, business colleagues on the SME Hub!
Of course, it's not the cheapest options. But such 'luxuries' generally cascade down the line.
It means, I believe, we can be ultimately more flexible running our business: whether that's from home; from a virtual office; from a bricks and mortar office; or, indeed, a car
Or another distraction while driving?
